Betula Pendula

For millennia, the birch has held an essential place in the Finnish landscape and collective memory. It embodies the deep, almost physical bond between Finnish people and the forest. Both a living material and a connection to my roots, the birch runs through my work in printmaking, sculpture and ceramics. Through it, I evoke the vital force of trees and the archaic connections that bind us to the living world.

Koto

The KOTO (ABODE / HOME) series is an invitation to the haltia, a protective spirit in Finnish animism, to reoccupy or visit its former dwelling—a tree that I knew and that also knew me. Working with this wood and creating this sculpture allowed me to extend the relationship I experienced with this tree.
